The surface as subject
On canvas, modern painting looks especially clear, because the format is taken seriously as picture plane. If you want modern oil on canvas for sale, proportion and color harmony are usually the first things to decide.
On stretched canvas a painter can set zones against each other precisely. The edge is no accident: the paint often wraps around the stretcher and turns the picture into an object. Less frame, more picture
Many modern works hang without a frame or in a slim wooden shadow gap. That keeps the eye on the surface. If you prefer a traditional frame, measure the depth of the stretcher first. Hang the picture with some distance to other objects so the surface can breathe.
