Hinting with water-based paint
Symbolism loves twilight: pictures between dream and myth, in which things mean more than they show. You can find symbolist mixed media with watercolor for sale here if you prefer quiet colors and hints.
Watercolor is translucent and allows nothing fully solid, which suits symbols. Gold, silver or wax add shimmer, drawing adds signs. Meaning arises without getting loud. These include motifs such as sleep, water, night and metamorphosis kept in delicate colors. A bit of gold or silver, a hint of wax or a strip of paper is enough for the sheet to feel solemn and restrained at once.

Hanging and surroundings
Symbolic sheets work in subdued surroundings: reading nook, bedroom, a hallway with soft light. A plain wooden frame and a wide mat support the calm attitude.
Signposts
With drawing you reach sheets with stronger line work. If you want a low-cost start, pieces under 500 euro offer fitting works on paper. Mind the light sensitivity of metallic paints and watercolor.
