Contour and color cloud
Graphic clarity and the softness of watercolor seem to exclude each other until you see them on one sheet. You can find graphic, illustrative mixed media with watercolor for sale here if you like signs, figures or letters on a delicate color ground.
Illustrators often lay a cloud of color first and draw the line afterward. Figures then look light yet stand clearly in the picture. Typographic elements gain a mood of their own from the color ground. These include halftoning, pictograms, banners of lettering and hand-drawn patterns. Watercolor supplies the soft counterpole to the line and keeps graphic severity from feeling cold.

Taking paper seriously
Watercolor paper is thicker and rougher than drawing paper and absorbs water better. Ask about the paper type if the description names it. Acid-free board in the frame stops the sheet from browning.
