Composing with paper
An abstract sheet made of gouache, paper cut-outs and pencil line resembles a small score of form and color. You can find abstract mixed media works with gouache for sale here to see these compositions in the original.
As in a score, each element stands for a beat: a red field, a blue strip, a line. The gouache supplies the fields, collage and pencil set accents that hold the balance in tension. Typical is an interplay of color fields, paper cutting and fine lines that you only understand up close. Look carefully and you see overlaps and small corrections that make the sheet lively.

A place on the wall
Abstract sheets benefit from bright, calm walls. Arrange two or three similar formats into a block and the colors converse. Frames of oak or white emphasize the paper.
Clarifying details
Ask about paper type, format and how the collage parts are attached. Gouache adheres only weakly to smooth foils. A description of the back helps judge whether the sheet is mounted or framed free.
