What the chalk achieves

Pastel chalk puts color down without mixing on a palette: the artist lets blue and yellow meet on the paper, and together they give the green perceived as foliage. Optically that is livelier than color stirred together beforehand.

Hanging in the home
The sheet comes into its own in bright rooms with side light. It need not be large, a medium format is enough to create mood. A white frame underlines the airiness.
Care note
Never keep pastel chalk sheets loose in a portfolio: friction takes pigment with it. Framed, with distance from the glass and out of the sun, the color layer stays stable for many years. Ask about size and paper color before you measure a wall. A sheet with a lot of paper margin around the drawing looks more generous and needs less mat, a borderless sheet calls for a wider one.
