Gradation makes illusion
Just pencil, just paper, and yet the picture seems to belong to another reality. You can buy surreal pencil drawings for sale here if you like riddles that manage entirely without color.
The deception works through softly flowing tones. A shadow pulled with a paper stump lets a sphere float, and a delicate lightening turns a surface into a window. The smoother the transitions, the stronger the effect. That takes patience, for each gradient is built from many whisper-thin layers, between which the paper must not become roughened or blotchy.

Think of the surroundings
Surreal pencil work suits rooms with clear lines and little decoration, where the sheet may speak alone. A white or light grey wall, a narrow wood frame and soft side light are enough.
Check the details
Ask for close-ups of the gradations. They show whether the work was even and whether the graphite lies rich but not greasy.
