Grading like a darkroom

Very light to very dark tones have to be separated cleanly and joined softly at once. Several grades are used for this, from a sharp hard pencil for contours to a soft one for deep shadow. A smooth paper surface helps hide the grain. Every trace stays traceable, and a trained eye can still see at the end which way the pencil was moved.

Protection and care
Graphite can be smeared, so a pane with UV protection suits it. Remove dust from the glass rather than from the sheet.
