Academic black

In classical work the form is laid in first, then the tonal values, and last the lights. The charcoal is guided with cloth, stump and finger until the move from half shadow to light is barely visible. That gives bodies that seem to grow out of the paper.

A quiet spot
Such sheets bring calm into a room and need calm themselves: little pattern around them, even light, a place to sit and look. The frame can be classical, with a mat in cream or white and glass with a spacer.
Care and paper
Ask about paper type and fixing, since charcoal is vulnerable to abrasion. For nude studies and portraits, it also helps to know whether a model or a reference was used. A signature in the corner belongs in a good description.
