Where Rounds Drift

Original artwork description

A Reference to Roundism

This colored pencil drawing ‘Where Rounds Drift – 13-04-26’ shows my love for combining cubist forms with realism. A small reference to Roundism too. A previous style but I must confess, basically it’s the same style as Neo Deco. Only the name differs. I just thought it was a better name than the nickname ‘Roundism’ and it refers to decorative patterns.

Crests and Troughs

This one started off by me feeling inspired by an old reference photo taken by Alfred Cheney Johnston. Not the first time though. Last January I made Sans Titre – 06-02-26 (Cajar Eric). In this one the female nude figure almost seemed to cascade down the couch. Beautiful curves formed subtle crests and troughs. They create wavy patterns, positioned diagonally across the frame. For quite some time I didn’t know what to do with this. The picture had it flaws too. The lighting I found a bit boring. Normally I’m used to a more heavy chiarscuro feeling. However, the forms kept on tickling my mind and then you know something is brewing.

My Subconsciousness Spoke

Surely a manner of letting your subconsciousness cook up something good. Nevertheless, I just started without any expectations or plans. I didn’t like her arm partially covered by the armrest in his picture. Therefor I decided to draw it in full. Still, I didn’t like the overall composition and because of the model reclining upside down the recognition failed too. Then I decided to turn the drawing upside down for a change. There it was, a beautiful composition: a woman submerged in waves. That’s why I drew many more in order to enhance this under water flow. Somehow it reminded me to my Ophelia I made last year. Not very keen on drawing yet another dead body, so I gave her some air bubbles. All’s well that ends well.
