Original artwork description
The imagery and motivation for this painting is inspired by Henry Purcell’s Cold Song aria, from the baroque opera King Arthur. In the stuttering libretto the Cold Genius implores a higher power to be released from the bitter cold. Despite being a 17th century song, it has a captivating contemporaneous feel. The figure used for this work was observed and recorded at the ‘Gloucester Goes Retro’ UK festival. Also published in the magazine Pomegranate, a London-based art and literary magazine known for featuring short stories, poems, essays, and art.
A Rowney Cryla acrylic base coat of burnt orange, then opaque pigments with subsequent paint washes thinned with diluted Liquidex airbrush medium. The overall result is an acrylic painting with a degree of luminosity rather than the usual flat finish.
Finished with a coat of Winsor Newton Satin UV varnish. A suggested frame width of at least 70mm for this painting. This makes for the best visual effect and prevents warping. Ready to be framed and hung.
