Original artwork description
The drawing for this work was started in 1978, the painting was finished in 2023. A long pregnancy perhaps, but maybe some retrospective was needed to complete it sincerely.
● Conception - I was born just after WW2 and the marker for adult conversations were ‘he did that before the war’ or ‘after the war she did this’..
● Gestation - The Vietnam war was an unending TV reality/unreality during my time as a young man.
● Realisation - Iraq/Afganistan wars and its good intensions, polluted by unforeseen ramifications.
● Repetition - At the time of typing, the Ukraine war with the inevitability of conflict generational amnesia and the despotism/corruption of power. A Rowney Cryla acrylic base coat of burnt orange over the manufacturers gesso finish. Opaque pigments have been used to lay down some areas, acting as subject matter undercoating. Subsequent layers of acrylic paint have been applied laced with Liquidex airbrush medium and deionised water to achieve a wash layer. This thin multiple layering of pigment allows for a degree of luminosity, avoiding the usual flat acrylic finish. A stretched canvas with one coat of Winsor Newton Satin UV varnish, this not only protects the painting, but has a unifying effect. Ready to be framed, a suggested frame width of at 70mm for this painting. This makes for the best visual effect and prevents warping.
