Original artwork description
These females were standing on a seat watching the train barreling across the wooden railway viaduct spanning the estuary of the Afon Mawddach towards Barmouth (North Wales UK). I distilled the background scene to focus on these inquisitive figures. The work consists of a Rowney Cryla acrylic base coat of burnt orange over the gesso manufacturers finish. Opaque pigments have been used to lay down some areas, also acting as undercoating for sections of the subject matter. Subsequent layers of acrylic paint have been applied in washes which has been thinned using Liquidex airbrush medium. This thin multiple layering of pigment allows for subtle tonal attributes and a degree of luminosity avoiding the usual flat acrylic finish.
Acrylic medium on rolled canvas board and finished with a coat of Winsor Newton Satin UV varnish, this not only protects the painting but has a unifying effect. A suggested frame width of at least 60mm for this 50x70cm painting. This makes for the best visual effect and prevents warping.
