Hewing, rasping, sanding
Stone is not built but released: chisel and rasp take away until the form is left. Carved marble pieces for sale at 500 to 1,000 euro appeal above all for their traces of handwork and the calm of the material.
Work in marble starts roughly with the point chisel, moves on to the claw chisel and rasps and ends with fine paper and polish. Looking closely, you can still see the toothmarks of the chisel on some pieces, left in place on purpose. Such contrasts between rough and smooth hold your attention on the path the stone has taken.

For admirers of the craft
Ask in the description about the type of stone and whether the surface is sealed or waxed. Small chips at edges are possible in marble if the stone gave way during the work, and they should be mentioned. A non-slip base and a fixed place make sure the weight surprises nobody. If you collect several small sculptures, you can contrast types of stone on purpose: light next to dark.
