Working against resistance
Diabase is so hard that stonemasons learn patience from it. Diabase stone sculptures for sale at 1,000 to 2,000 euro are for those who value craft in dark rock.
In diabase every edge the mason sets holds, and every wrong decision stays visible. The rock is dense, heavy and fine-grained, very even when well ground. Looking closely, you notice a delicate structure that only appears in raking light. Grinding marks, tooth work and polished zones show how much handwork is in a piece.

Good to know
The darkness of the stone swallows detail, so photos from several angles help. Ask about type, weight and surface treatment. On floors felt is advisable, outdoors a firm plinth. Clean with water and a soft brush, without harsh agents. Very hard does not mean invulnerable: edges can chip from a knock, so a note on small marks in the description is normal and useful. A base of felt or cork spares furniture and stone alike. Transport should be well padded.
