A built plate
A collagraph begins as a plate with fabric, card, sand, or thread glued on, which is just what makes it so suited to abstract compositions. Abstract collagraphs for sale under 500 euro offer sheets you can almost feel.
The printed image grows like a relief: glued-on materials take ink differently, raised spots print dark, hollows hold ink and show up softly. The paper is slightly embossed in the process. Each material leaves a different tone: card a matte one, gauze a fine grid, sand a grainy one.

Texture in raking light

Notes for selecting
With collagraphs the plate changes with every pull, so editions tend to be small and impressions slightly different. Ask about edition size and paper weight, because sturdy paper carries the embossing. Ask about the paper as well: it must be thick enough to take the deep embossing.
