A plate like a relief
Collagraph builds the printing plate from materials such as cardboard, fabric or sand and so transfers relief onto paper. You can buy collagraphs with ink for sale under 500 euro if you want to feel structure.
In collagraph, pieces are glued onto the plate and sealed. Printing creates embossing and textures that you can even feel on the sheet. Ink and printing ink give each raised spot its own tone. Even on small plates the relief is clearly visible, and many collectors treasure exactly this tangible, handmade side of the print.

Structure in raking light
The embossing looks especially good in side light. Hang a collagraph so that daylight falls across the sheet at an angle. A deep frame lets the raised areas breathe.
Deciding with paper in mind
Ask about paper weight, since thick handmade paper carries embossing best. Number, signature and edition should be named. Collagraphs are often small editions because the plate wears down in printing.
