Gray values from hatching
Etching is the process in which photorealism grows out of metal: line by line, with needle and acid, until a soft gray emerges from hundreds of hatches. Photorealist etchings are for sale here for those who want a picture that is craft up close and photo from afar.
Dense cross-layers produce shadow, open lines light. With aquatint, soft areas can be added, for sky, water, or skin. Each plate is etched several times, checked, and reworked before it touches paper.

Reading it in raking light
On an etching the plate mark shows as a slight edge in the paper. It tells you the sheet was pressed, not copied. A frame with space to the glass leaves this depression untouched, and a white mat frames it.
Details for buying
Ask about plate size, edition size, and impression number, and look for a pencil signature below the motif. A note on paper type helps as well, since etchings need absorbent paper. For additions, ink offers itself, in a smaller price class under 500 euro.
