Etched line, rich ink
In etching, ink becomes drawing: it collects in etched lines and settles into the paper under pressure as velvety black. Etchings with ink are for sale starting under 500 euro, for instance as photorealistic or graphic sheets.
In etching the image forms on a metal plate: lines are scratched or deepened with acid, the plate is inked and wiped clean, and color stays only in the grooves. Under the press the paper pulls it out. That makes every line look slightly raised and deep black.

Small sheets, great calm
Etchings are often compact and ask for closeness. A wide margin in the mat gives the plate air and shows the embossing. Hang the sheets at eye level, singly or as a group, and keep the light calm and even, without reflections.
Signs of a genuine impression
You recognize an original by the plate mark, by the number in pencil, usually written as a fraction, and by the signature. Ask about the edition size, the paper and whether the impression was pulled during the artist’s lifetime. That knowledge helps place a sheet correctly.
