Meaning in the detail
A sign carries special weight on paper: it lies flat, quiet and stays legible. Symbolist photographs on paper are for sale for anyone who loves pictures that do not explain themselves at a glance.
Symbolism lives on things that stand for something else: an empty cage, a staircase into water, a glove. On baryta paper fine details stay visible in the shadow, while on cotton paper they blur more gently, as in a drawing.

Where a riddle may hang
Such pictures work in places where conversation arises: at the dining table, in the hallway, above the fireplace. A dark wooden frame gives them seriousness, a white frame lightness. Choose by the mood you want to give the room.
Looking and asking further
You will find symbolism in color or in the 500 to 1,000 euro tier. Ask about paper type, edition and signature. A short explanation of the picture idea helps without dissolving the riddle.
