White ground, cool world
Surreal pictures on gesso seem to have their world behind frosted glass: still, bright and sharply outlined. Anyone seeking surreal paintings with gesso from 1,000 to 2,000 euro for sale wants riddles on a matte, white ground.
On gesso, colors appear clear and cool, because the white beneath thin layers glows through. Surreal scenes use that: rooms open, things hover in white haze. Where the ground stays free, it becomes sky or fog itself.

Size and structure
For originals from 1,000 to 2,000 euro, medium to large canvases are no rarity. Check whether the gesso ground is applied evenly. It should show neither cracks nor brush marks unless they are intended.
Light for dream scenes
Surreal pictures on a light ground need calm, cool daylight. Warm lamps tint the surfaces yellowish, hard spots create shine. A spot with side light from a window suits them, and a white floating frame extends the surface visually into the room.
