Drawing and water
Pencil and watercolor complement each other like scaffold and skin: the lead fixes the form, the water fills it with light. You can find watercolors with pencil under 500 euro for sale here if you value drawing and lightness alike.
Beneath transparent washes the pencil line stays visible, and that is exactly the charm. Travel sketches, nature studies and portraits often come about this way. Graphite does not disturb the water as long as the paper is sturdy enough.

Paper, mat, distance
Watercolors with pencil above all need white margins and an acid-free mat. Avoid damp rooms, because paper takes up moisture and starts to cockle. A frame that does not squeeze the sheet keeps the surface flat.
Edges and waves
Watercolor paper can cockle slightly when the air is damp. A mat keeps it in shape, while a frame that is too tight pushes it into wrinkles. Ask about paper weight: thick sheets stay smooth even without being stretched.
