Old subjects, matte paint
Classicism and gouache share a liking for clearly bounded fields of color. Anyone hoping to buy classical gouache on paper, listed among gouache paintings for sale, is looking for subjects in fine, quiet coloration.
Still lifes, landscapes and figure groups take on a special tone in gouache: the color is dense yet light, without the shine of oil. Contours remain clear, shadows warm. You recognize the hand in the way areas meet.

Protecting the paper
Works like these need acid-free paper, glass and a place without strong daylight. Ask about the support and the framing. A cream mat matches the muted tones, while a white one adds contrast. Comparing with sheets in other styles is a useful way to orient yourself.
How old does the sheet look
Gouache ages slowly when protected. Watch for stains, yellowing at the edge and small cracks in the paint. A clear condition note says whether the sheet was cleaned or retouched. That helps you choose a quiet, well-preserved piece.
