The dig site on the wall
Plaster is the natural partner for mixed techniques, because it holds paper, fabric and found objects and can be tinted over. For 2,000 to 5,000 euro you can find mixed-media paintings with plaster for sale that feel like excavation sites.
Some artists press cloth, string or cardboard into the wet plaster and lift them off again, so only imprints remain. Others embed parts and half cover them. The result recalls masonry that carries traces of earlier lives.

With space and light
Large mixed-media works in plaster want to be studied: a hallway with side light or a studio with a long wall offers the right frame. Matte walls let the relief rest.
What to look out for
Ask about all the materials that are embedded and whether the piece ships in transport-safe packaging. Weight and hanging system should be in the description as well. Anyone who values several materials in a picture should study close-up photos of the surface. That is where you see whether paper and fabric are cleanly anchored in the plaster. Seams and rims reveal much about the care taken.
