Canvas, oil, wall

Oil on canvas is the classic pairing of painting, and in the 500 to 1,000 euro range it comes in manageable yet effective sizes. Here are such paintings for sale, from the finely executed motif to the free composition.

On stretched canvas oil paint sits firm and develops its depth over time. The weave lets the brushwork stand alive. Pictures in this price band often carry two or three layers, which you can clearly make out in the paint under side light.

Without a frame or with a gap

When the sides of the canvas are neatly painted, the picture can hang frameless and looks contemporary. A frame with a shadow gap gives extra hold and lifts the motif. Check the depth of the stretcher bar so frame and picture match.

Reading the craft

Good descriptions reveal the primer, the kind of paint and whether a varnish is present. A photo of the back often shows hanging hardware and inscriptions. Ask about special features, such as glazes or knife marks, that you cannot see from afar.
