The voice of the canvas
Stretched canvas gives oil the classic ground: slightly elastic, with a fine weave that holds the paint. Here you can find oil on canvas under 500 euro for sale, in sizes that are easy to place.
On canvas oil settles with fullness. The weave offers the brush some resistance, so the stroke stays grainy and alive. Depending on the primer the surface feels smooth or rough, and depending on tension it springs back slightly when touched.

On the wall without a frame
Many oil canvases hang frameless, especially when the sides are painted or neatly finished. A floater frame, a slim frame with a gap, lifts the picture a little from the wall. In small rooms this creates air.
Clarifying before you buy
Ask about the depth of the stretcher bar and the hanging hardware on the back. Whether a varnish has been applied belongs here too. A freshly painted picture needs months before it is ready for varnish, and the text should say so.
