Handwriting before technique
When painting does not commit to oil or acrylic, the gesture picks the tools: one picture may consist of paint, oil stick, raw pigment and chalk together. Expressive, gestural painting for sale in the 2,000 to 5,000 euro range is therefore best chosen by handwriting, not by label.
What counts here is how a stroke feels: nervous, forceful, calmly flowing. Looking at several pictures side by side quickly shows which gestures sit with confidence. Good gestural painting never looks accidental, but as if drawn from a single breath. That also explains why photos rarely show such work in full: relief, gloss and depth open up only in front of the original.

Think of wall color and room
Strong gestures tolerate neutral walls. White, gray or warm sand beige gives the paint room without competing with it. In small rooms, a single picture is often enough as a focal point.
Details on the support
Check whether canvas, paper or wood was used, whether the work is varnished and how it hangs. Ask follow-up questions early and you will save trouble later. Ask whether the paint is protected with varnish or wax, because that decides how you will clean the picture later.
