Two greys, two effects
Charcoal and graphite together paint light in two registers: deep and velvety, fine and silvery. You can buy impressionist charcoal drawings in graphite for sale here if you like things that float.
Charcoal provides breadth and depth; it is rubbed until the sky or water dissolves softly. The graphite draws what can be grasped within it: branches, roofs, boats. The alternation between the materials creates space and atmosphere.

Light from the side
Because of the difference in sheen, such sheets show best in flat side light. Do not hang them opposite a window but beside it. A broad frame in dark wood holds the soft tones. Where the charcoal dissolves into fog, the graphite holds the center of the picture together, a kind of quiet pacemaker for the eye.
Dust in mind
Both materials rub off, charcoal even more. Have the sheet framed with glass and transport it flat. Fixative should only be used with the maker’s consent.
