Building in layers

The technique often starts with an underpainting in dark and mid tones, with light accents following. Between layers a light fixative makes sure the chalk accepts new color. That is how depth and luminosity arise.

Format and wall
At this tier sheets are often large enough for a wall of their own. Even daylight shows them best, direct sun is better avoided. An oak or walnut frame suits warm pastel tones.
When buying
Pay attention to paper type and weight, since pastel on thin paper can ripple. A note on the frame, glass type and spacing belongs in the listing too. Also ask how the chalk was secured between layers. Sheets with several fixings show deeper colors but lose a little of the typical velvet feel, which is a matter of taste.
