I took this photograph in Tuscany, Italy; it is part of the *Tuscan Summer* series.
This landscape is less a record of a specific location than an atmospheric impression of it. Muted earth tones and distant shapes create an almost painterly space, evoking the Renaissance technique known as *sfumato*—a method characterized by the gentle blurring of outlines and the creation of fluid, soft transitions between light and shadow.
I have consciously reduced the Tuscan landscape here to layers of light, earth and silence – it is a landscape suspended between photography and painting.
