charcoal drawing on paper
Original artwork description
A powerful charcoal portrait that captures the moment just before emotional release. The subject’s face is lifted and exposed, eyes closed, as if caught between surrender and endurance. Vertical streaks cut through the image, disrupting the clarity of the form and suggesting movement, erosion, or the passage of time.
Rendered in charcoal, the work juxtaposes smooth, almost photographic realism with raw, gestural marks that break the surface. The face remains the anchor—still, composed—while the surrounding textures begin to dissolve and fragment. Subtle traces of text and abrasion add to the sense of internal pressure pushing outward.
Light and shadow are used not only to define form, but to intensify emotion. The contrast is stark, the atmosphere dense. This piece explores the threshold between control and collapse—where feeling can no longer be contained, yet has not fully emerged.
