Neo Deco

Original artwork description

Tombow Zoom 707

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 06-03-26’ is the third work in my series of square-format female nude drawings. Delicate cubism once again. After the last one I thought I’d pick up my regular mechanical pen with 4B graphite pencil fillings. Neo Deco – 21-02-26 became an explosion of chiaroscuro. Those Faber-Castell Pitt Matt Graphite pencils never let you down and you can hatch something to a complete darkness. This time a more gentle approach was needed so I used a mechanical pen relatively new to me. Beek-Ubbergen – 16-01-26 I drew with it and the pen is called Tombow Zoom 707. Almost impossibly slim, yet proven to rest effortlessly in my hand. These regular graphite pencil fillings of old take care of much subtle tonal transitions. I hope you can see them for yourself in this drawing at hand.

Same Squarish Box

For this one I used the same slender model and had her pose in a complete different position. The body outline can be put in the same squarish box though. This is the concept and the square-size paper confirms it. As said before, these formats are new to me and I like them a lot. 21 x 21 is a bit small but big enough to make my statement. Not sure whether I will do a complete series of 10 drawings for example but I am pretty sure I will make at least one elaboration in oil. This one might be a good candidate, don’t you think?

Long Live Razor Light

With regard to the style, it’s the same as the previous two. I think I have found the way of rendering that suits me most for this time being. Round structures set off against straight contour delineations. They serve as boundaries for tonal rhythyms. Long live razor light that plays its part so well in this one. However, it took me quite some time to direct the lighting, showing the most optimal effect. This way cubism comes naturally because I can spot all the right cubist planes easily.
