A watercolor made on the bank of lake Salagou in the south of France was used as a study for this oil painting. It was painted in successive glazes (several layers of semi transparent paint) over a period of several months. I tried to simplify as much as possible to keep only the essentials: the mountain of Liausson already in shadow, the earth and the red ochre rocks, contrasting with the sparse Mediterranean vegetation, the reeds at the edge of the lake and the sky reflected in the water.
