Hand-formed and fired
Clay is earthy, formable and astonishingly hard once fired: a material that has accompanied sculptors for millennia. Clay sculptures for sale at 500 to 1,000 euro suit those who like warm, handmade pieces.
Clay sculptures at this level are mostly medium-sized and show careful finishing: figures, heads, animals or abstract forms. The clay is built up, dried, fired in the kiln and often coated with glaze or slip. It shrinks by a few percent in the process, which has to be allowed for in planning. If you like loam, you see the difference from fine clay in the firing.

Checking and caring
A gentle tap shows whether the sculpture is fired through: a bright ring points to a solid body. Ask about firing, glaze and frost resistance. Clay belongs in a dry place, on a firm base with felt. A dry brush is enough for care, a damp cloth for glaze.
