Sandstone, limestone and travertine allow hands, folds and facial features that in granite only arise with great effort. The surfaces stay alive: light grain, visible pores, warm tones from cream to ochre. That makes figures look as if they had grown out of the ground itself. Protection from weather
Soft rocks absorb moisture. A statue outdoors should be impregnated or sheltered, for example under a roof or in a niche. Indoors it gains in side light. Ask about type of rock, treatment and weight, and about the connection to the plinth. Ask too whether the figure is made from a single block or whether parts such as arms were attached, since that affects durability.
