Blows as handwriting
Anyone who works gesturally with a chisel or carving knife leaves strokes that later read as rhythm. Expressive sculpted pieces for sale between 1,000 and 2,000 euro are best judged by enlarging the surface in the photos.
In a gestural piece every blow stays visible. Long, pulling cuts create momentum, short dense notches feel restless. Roughly knocked-off areas contrast with carefully sanded ones, and that is where it is decided whether a form feels forceful or raw.

Choosing the light
Raking light brings out tool marks in relief, diffuse daylight calms them. If you want to see the tension of the surface, set the sculpture beside a window or aim a small lamp flat across it.
What matters when buying
Ask about material, weight and whether the surface is sealed. With wood, a note on drying helps, with stone one on polish. A signature on the underside or the base belongs in a complete listing.
