Firing skin and shrinkage

In the kiln, clay shrinks and densifies, and the surface takes on its own skin from smoke, flame or glaze. Figures fired from loam show tones from pale beige to brick red, sometimes with dark patches left by the fire. These marks belong to the craft and are not faults.
