Etching is printmaking with needle and acid, known for fine lines and velvety blacks. Etchings with ink for sale under 500 euro often come as a small plate with a generous paper margin.
In etching, a metal plate is worked with a needle and bitten with acid. The ink sits in the grooves and is brought onto the paper under pressure. The plate mark presses into the sheet, a sure sign of intaglio printing. With small plates especially you see how much space an etching holds: a window view or a group of trees is enough to create depth.
