Softness as handwriting
Impressionist photography lives on mood, not sharpness: a park in haze, footsteps in rain, light flickering through leaves. You can find impressionist photographs under 500 euro for sale here and compare them at your leisure.
Camera movement, blur or special lenses dissolve contours until only color and light remain. In a small format this feels like a watercolor you could hold in your hand. Pictures like these are often found in this price tier.

A quiet effect
A soft picture calms a room without dominating it. It fits above the bed, in a guest room or on a hallway wall. Matte papers avoid reflections and let tones appear muted.
Keeping an eye on technique
For works with special printing processes, a look at works with ink is worthwhile. In every case watch paper, edition and signature. Note that soft pictures draw their effect from calm. Do not hang them in rooms with a lot of movement, such as beside heavily used doors. A quiet spot shows them to best advantage.
