Fluid and solid in one picture
Working with acrylic and oil pastel means using paint twice: once fluid and flat, once creamy and grainy. If you want to buy acrylic and oil pastel paintings, you will meet this double voice in many forms. They are all paintings for sale.
Acrylic can run heavily diluted like watercolor or be applied in thick impasto. Oil pastel adds edges, highlights, drawing and pattern. Each material has its time: the acrylic dries first, then the crayon carries on above it without dissolving the color underneath. Whether to start or finish with oil pastel is not a matter of taste: crayon belongs on dry acrylic, never beneath it. Respect that and the picture holds firmly while keeping the softness of the crayon.
