Letters by hand
When drawing meets typography, every letter becomes part of the image and every line a line of text. Graphic ink drawings in mixed media for sale are sheets that want to be read and looked at.
Hand lettering in ink has a liveliness that computer fonts do not know. Spacing wavers, serifs differ, swashes run out. Combined with figures or ornaments, the sheet works as a poster and a miniature at once.

Kinds of line
There are fine hairlines, broad pen strokes, grids and patterns. Many draftspeople combine them with collage parts or color to emphasize lettering. In the mixed-media field especially, pages arise that recall sketchbooks.
What to look for
Have the signature shown to you and ask whether the sheet is part of a series. Photos should make lettering and detail clearly visible. A mat of light board and crystal-clear protective glass bring out the contrasts of the ink.
