The line that never sets
Vine and willow charcoal leave a line that can be smudged or lifted again within seconds, which is exactly what an impressionist eye needs. Charcoal drawings in an impressionist style for sale appeal to people who look for that shimmering softness.
Charcoal clings only loosely to the grain of the paper and so stays mobile. The artist lays down short touches, pulls them with the edge of a hand and lifts lights back with an eraser. Water, foliage or street light then seem to have no hard borders.

Care and wall space
A dark sheet needs empty wall around it so it does not feel heavy. A mat and glass guard against abrasion, and the frame should leave air behind the paper. Good listings say whether fixative was used, because too much dulls the velvety depth and too little lets the charcoal travel.
Which charcoal?
Vine charcoal is soft and dusty, ideal for mist and haze. Compressed charcoal gives a deeper black and holds better. Some artists combine both on one sheet, which a listing may mention.
