Where the stroke disappears

This takes patience and graded hardness: hard leads for edges, soft ones for shadows, with countless steps in between. Smooth paper lets tones run into each other without grain. Highlights on metal or water drops are usually erased lights. It stands out most with faces and hands, because there a single wrong grey gives away how much experience stands behind the sheet.

Look near and far
Such sheets react to distance. From several feet they read like a photograph, from a hand’s width away you can spot the lead. Hang them with room to step back, ideally under diffuse light and without a spot.
Recognizing the real thing
A photograph has no paper fiber and no graphite sheen. If you are unsure, ask for close-up shots of the surface.
