Original artwork description
‘Escaped Land 18’ was created as part of a series in which I explored the boundary between landscape and abstraction. I experimented with colour, light and the degree of detail, asking myself: when does a landscape remain recognisable, and when does it become abstract? Where exactly does that boundary lie?
The work is loosely inspired by the book ‘Het ontsnapte land‘ by Geert Mak, particularly his descriptions of the vastness and silence of the Dutch polder landscape: the rustling reeds, still water reflecting the sky, and the distant sound of a cow.
I wanted to evoke rather than depict this landscape. By reducing the image to colour, light and subtle traces, the familiar gradually becomes uncertain. The painting invites the viewer to move between recognition and abstraction, and to find their own landscape within it.
