Vita

Laura Stötefeld is a Germany-based artist and scientific illustrator whose work exists at the intersection of art and natural science. Before pursuing her path as an artist and scientific illustrator she studied biology with the main focus on ecology, particularly the interactions and relationships between organisms.

Her primary focus lies in botanical illustration—the close observation of plants, their structures, growth patterns, and subtle details. With a calm hand and a trained eye, she translates complex natural forms into reduced, often monochrome drawings that are both aesthetically engaging and scientifically precise.
Her works are mainly created in charcoal and graphite, media that allow her to explore fine gradations of light and shadow. Rather than simply depicting her subjects, she seeks a deeper understanding: each line follows the internal logic of the plant, each surface contributes to both clarity and atmosphere. The result is a body of work that combines scientific accuracy with a quiet, almost meditative visual language.
In addition to her drawings, Laura Stötefeld creates handcrafted prints, extending her artistic process into the realm of printmaking. These works carry the same sensitivity to detail and material, translating her motifs into tactile, carefully produced editions that emphasize both craftsmanship and artistic intention.

Alongside her independent artistic practice, she also takes on commissions in the field of scientific illustration, collaborating with institutions, researchers, and projects where visual clarity and precision are essential. Her works are exhibited in artistic contexts and are also used in scientific and educational settings.

In her practice, she repeatedly returns to themes such as growth, transience, and the subtle order of nature. Her drawings invite the viewer to slow down, to look more closely, and to discover the essential within reduction.
