Dream images in graphite
A pencil draws shadows that seem to grow out of the paper, and surrealism needs exactly that. You can find surreal paintings with pencil under 500 euro for sale here, ideal if you enjoy enigmas rendered in fine gray.
Surreal drawing works with displacement: things float, scales tip, shadows fall the wrong way. The pencil allows a rendering so exact that the impossible feels credible. Soft gradients supply the stillness in which dreams unfold.

Small, yet full of questions
Smaller sheets in this tier reward close viewing, like an open notebook. Good places are a hallway, a shelf or the wall above a desk. Choose a frame with a spacer so the soft lead does not rub against the glass.
Protecting dark gray
Soft pencil holds a lot of pigment that can easily travel. Never rub across the surface, and store unframed sheets with acid-free interleaving. Behind glass with a gap, the shadows stay where the artist placed them.
