Painting with chalk
Oil pastel is painting by hand without a brush: you apply color directly, blend on the sheet and layer while it stays tacky. Mixed media painting with oil pastel is for sale in this price band when color saturation and spontaneity are wanted.
The technique allows incised drawing in the wet color film, glazes with solvent and thick crusts of color. Wax makes watercolor or ink stand in beads. The result is surfaces you can almost feel with your eyes.

In the middle range
Sheets with a sound concept and a successful color balance often sit here. They tolerate larger formats and strong frames without losing freshness. If you search by style, you will find more painting in other price bands. A look at edge treatment and signature is worthwhile too. A signature at the lower right in chalk or pencil is common, and the description says whether a certificate of authenticity is included as well.
Care and hanging
Wax-based color responds to heat. Avoid spots above heaters and in midday sun. Glass with UV protection and a frame with air around the sheet make sense.
