I am not what you think I am. I am what I think you think I am.
C.H. Cooley
We are shaped not only by the way we perceive ourselves, but also by the way we believe others perceive us.
Over time, these external perceptions can become internal ones. We begin to look at ourselves through borrowed eyes.
Sociologist Charles Horton Cooley described:
“A self-idea of this sort seems to have three principal elements: the imagination of our appearance to the other person; the imagination of his judgment of that appearance; and some sort of self-feeling…”
— Charles Horton Cooley, Human Nature and the Social Order, 1902
Point of Perspective explores the fascinating gap between Who I am, who I think I am, and who I think others think I am.
