This oil painting was started on location in the spring (at a spot that is now off-limits!) and completed in my studio with the help of a watercolour painted at the same spot. This magnificent place, shaded by hundred-year-old plane trees, lies about a hundred metres from the source of the Lez (the emergence of an underground river) just beyond the catchment that supplies water to Montpellier and the surrounding area. Plane trees in warm hues – reds, ochres and yellows – anchor the foreground. Their sculptural forms contrast with the lush foliage and the intense greens of the background. The water, rendered with dynamic brushstrokes, captures the light and shadows, reflecting the sky and vegetation in a fragmented play of mirrors. This work is framed and It can also be sold without a frame (but ready to hang).
