Prints for Sale: Original Editions by Independent Artists
An original print is made by hand: the artist cuts, etches or paints the printing surface and pulls each sheet. The result is a small edition that differs clearly from a reproduction. Linocut, etching and monotype each have their own line and tonal range. With independent artists, the hand behind the work stays visible in every sheet.

Linocut, Etching or Monotype?
Linocut favors flat color and bold outlines. The motif is carved into linoleum, inked and printed, and the cut marks are part of the charm. The sheets read as graphic and suit modern, uncluttered walls.
Etching is built from fine lines bitten into a metal plate. You can often see the plate mark as a slight emboss in the paper, and dense hatching builds tone. These sheets reward a close look, for example in a study or a hallway.
Monotype gives a one-off: paint goes on a smooth plate and is transferred to paper, and a second pull would look different. The effect is painterly, soft and lively. It suits anyone who wants the character of a print with the appeal of a single original.
By Style and Budget
- Graphic, illustrative and typographic: image and lettering interlock, often with clean shapes and rich color.
- Minimalism: reduced lines and plenty of white space for calm walls.
- Comic: characters and sequential storytelling bring humor to a room.
- under 500 euro: this price range typically means smaller formats and editions on paper, a good way to start collecting.
- 500 to 1,000 euro: larger sheets and more elaborate printing come into play here.
Questions Before You Buy
What do edition size and numbering mean?
Under the image, a pencil note gives the sheet’s running number and the total edition. The smaller the edition, the rarer the sheet. The listing should state both.
How can I tell an original from a reproduction?
An original print often shows a plate mark, visible layers of ink and a pencil signature. A giclée is a high-quality digital print and should be described as such. Under a loupe, fine halftone dots give away a mechanical print.
How should I frame and hang a sheet?
Choose UV-protective glass and an acid-free mat, and keep it out of direct sun. Unframed sheets are best stored flat in a portfolio.
Can I talk about the price?
Some sheets are marked “Open to offers”. You buy from independent artists who list on Artplaner, so questions about paper and impression can be put to them.
