Depth from few means
Oil paint and a modern visual language get along very well: the paint can be spread into calm, rich planes or set angular with a palette knife, and both stay visible for a long time. Modern oil paintings on canvas for sale between 2,000 and 5,000 euro deserve a close look at the depth of color.
When only three or four colors carry a picture, the quality of the pigments shows. Oil gives blue a velvety depth, red a warm core and white a mild brightness. Small variations in application turn a flat area into a living zone. Even a single brush stroke feels heavier and warmer on primed canvas than on smooth paper.

Wall color and light
A modern oil painting speaks most strongly on a calm wall in white, gray or sand. Choose light that arrives from the side or from above at an angle, so the paint casts shadows and the surface breathes.
At purchase and in care
Ask about varnish, drying status and stretcher. In large, flat pictures especially, the tension of the canvas matters; it should neither sag nor show waves. If you compare several pictures, view them in daylight whenever possible, since artificial light often shifts blues and greens.
